Sometimes Talking With Your Teen Is Not Enough
Written by Craig Rogers, Posted on , in Section Teens & Tweens
Parenting a troubled teen is never easy. Sometimes talking with yourstruggling child is not enough, especially when your boy or girl is violent, abusing drugs or alcohol, involved in reckless and risky behaviors, or struggling with depression. You may be in despair over failed attempts to communicate, endlessly fighting with the open defiance of your teen. Or you may live in fear of your teen's violent mood swings and explosive anger. While parenting a troubled teen can often seem like an impossible task, is it time to stop talking and just act? There are steps parents can take to help their teens transition into a happy, successful young adult.
As the parent of a troubled teen, you are faced with even greater trials, because these teens face emotional, mental or behavioral problems that surpass the normal teenage issues. These teens may constantly exhibit at-risk behaviors or they may display symptoms of mental health issues, such as eating disorders, depression or anxiety.

Changing appearance along with problems at school
Cutting and self-harm
Extreme weight loss or weight gain
Constant escalation of arguments
Violent at home

Parents, if you identify these behaviors in your troubled teen, it is time to seek appropriate mental health treatment. Residential treatment centers offer programs that families may need to consider, which are specifically designed to treat mental health issues and mood disorders in teens, and are staffed to provide constant supervision and therapeutic support. These programs are setup to provide education, mental health support and therapy, medication and life skills.
